But it was there, in that bed, that the presence Ivy would name “The Thing” first visited her. She woke suddenly one night, her instinct telling her to listen. She couldn’t remember having a bad dream, but her heart raced, and she knew something was strange. Her eyes were drawn to the doorway, which was always propped open with a rock to allow cool breezes to pass through the room. That night, however, it wasn’t an open door. It was an open mouth saying, “Come.”

Ivy followed the voice, passing silently down the hallway, into the kitchen, and out to the yard. A presence commanded her to go beyond the gate and walk farther into the darkness. Ivy couldn’t define it, but she knew something was trying to lure her away from the house. She also knew she would get in trouble with her grandparents if she obeyed it, and she feared being punished more than any creature or presence trying to control her. Shivering, she slipped back inside the house as quietly as she could and buried herself under the blankets on her big bed.
